IPOD Mini Static: What should you do? |

|
The Problem: The IPOD Mini after limited use has a repeated
issue with static in the headphone that Apple refuses to fix if the player
is out of warranty (1 year). |
|
|
|
|
|
|
The History: The IPOD Mini Static issue first arose in April
of 2004 (BBC: IPOD Sound
Problems) when many user complained that they were experiencing sound issues with
the players (Apple Insider:
Sound Issues) with one person actually documenting a potential design fault in
the product (Design Issue Documented).
After this Apple pushed back the worldwide release of the mini and some believe that
they did this to fix the static design issue although they never admitted any wrong
doing and didn't recall the product. |

The Result: Many users can expect to have the static problem
occur in the IPOD mini which will prevent further use. Users are offered 10%
off of a new IPOD. In other words, Apple is willing to give users approximately
$20 to make up for the poor quality of their product. In the end, users
can take the 10% or try one of the options below.... |

What Else Can Users Do: |
|
|
|
1. Try this fix (emailed
to me) but beware you may damage it and others may not be willing to purchase
it after this |
|
|
|
|
2. Register your complaint here by entering your IPOD info. and description
of the problem. If we get enough people to register their complaint perhaps
we can get Apple to do the RIGHT thing and repair this problem. |
|
|
|
|
3. Write Apple
IPOD support and/or call 1-800-MY-APPLE to
let them know how you feel...and if you don't mind please send us (static@philoi.com) a
copy of your comments so we can post some of them. |
|
|
4. If you purchased your IPOD using AMEX then you have an extra year of service
warranty, just contact AMEX
Buyers Assurance Protection. |
|
|
5. Contact a repair shop (see a short list at the right) and ship your IPOD
to them to have it repaired (cost = $10 shipping + $50-$100 for repair) which comes
with 6 month warranty. Total cost is $60-$110 with only 6 month warranty. |
|
|
6. Sell your ipod (for $50-$90) to one of the online purchasers (see a short
list at the right) and buy a new IPOD Mini ($200) with your AMEX so you now have a
two year warranty. Total cost = $150-$110 but you get a new IPOD with a 2 year warranty.
